Health Screening

Published in Institute News on 02 August 2011 by Vivienne Pearson

IBAS and PreventionXpress plan to offer basic health screening for visitors and staff at Austin Health.  The first screening session was offered at the Austin campus in July.  Anthony Carbines, State Government member for Ivanhoe, was one visitor who took advantage of the opportunity to check his risk levels for sleep disorders and lung disease as well as blood pressure, diabetes and other age and gender related conditions.   The screening takes around 10 minutes and is conducted by a combination of a nurse and a confidential computer portal.  Each person receives their results in a simpe yet detailed report to assist them with following up results with their GP.   Anthony Carbines is pictured here with nurse Ann DiStefano who conducted the screening.

Funding Success

IBAS has received a grant to investigate the best treatment for Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome.  The grant is from the ResMed Foundation, a private charitable organisation based in the United States. Not being able to breathe well overnight is a major problem for an increasing number of Australians with obesity and is now the major reason for complex, overnight breathing support.  Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, a potentially fatal disease, can be managed using two different strategies.  The first (CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a cheaper, simpler option that is easily available but doesn't work for everyone.  The second (Bi-level ventilation) is a more expensive approach that requires specialised services. This nationwide study will determine which treatment is better for patients and more cost-effective for the community. Commencing later in 2011, the project will bring together an experienced group referral centers for home ventilation, based around the Australasian Sleep Trials Network Ventilatory Support Working Group that is focused on optimizing clinical practice through high quality trials.
