Newsletter and Information Breakfast Invitation

IBAS has published its 2012 Newsletter - written to keep you up to date with what's happening in the Institute this year. Anyone interested in the work of IBAS is cordially invited to attend the IBAS Information Breakfast. This free event is being held on Wednesday, 9th May from 7-9am at the Greensborough RSL (111 Main St, Greensborough) and all are welcome. Rob Pierce Memorial Award 2011

Congratulations to Jeanette Tamplin, the winner of the 2011 Rob Pierce Memorial Award. The award aims to encourage excellence in research within the fields of respiratory and sleep medicine. It is awarded to the best poster in these fields presented at Austin LifeSciences Research Week. Professor Rob Pierce was the founder of IBAS and the CEO until his death during the Victorian Black Saturday Bushfires. The award encourages excellence in respiratory and sleep research. Jeanette's research was also the subject of a newspaper article in the Diamond Valley and Heidelberg Leader newspapers. Reported by Shaun Cambell and quoting Dr David Berlowitz, the article describes the potential of singing as a way of preventing respiratory complications for people with spinal cord injuries. NHMRC Grant Success

As for most health and medical research organisations, the outcome of grant applications to the NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) is eagerly anticipated. IBAS researchers have been successful in obtaining three Project Grants and two Early Career Fellowships. Ginseng project in the news

Channel 7 news featured a story about Ginseng in COPD project, which is trialling the use of ginseng, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine, for treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). IBAS is conducting the project along with Box Hill Hospital and RMIT University. For a summary of the news item, see the Channel 7 website.
